How to edit layers in Cricut Design Space
Explore all the features of the layer editing tools.
Cricut offers a wide possibility to be creative with SVG files. What makes this possible is the different layers of the SVG. Keep on reading to find out how you can easily edit the layers of an SVG in Cricut Design Space!
Get started – upload the SVG
First thing to do is to upload the SVG file.
Once this is done, you will be able to see the available layers in the toolbar to the right. The total amount of layers an SVG has depends on how the designer created the file. The more layers, the more complex the SVG file is – but this will also allow you to be more creative!
In the toolbar to the side you can also find a bunch of features that allows you edit the layers:
- Layers editing : Group, Ungroup, Duplicate, Delete, Slice, Weld, Attach, Flattened, Contour
- Color Sync – Allows you to select multiple layers and color sync these.
How to edit an SVG
If you want to start editing, you first need to Ungroup the SVG file. To do this, select (highlight) the file and click UnGroup in the toolbar on the right. The SVG is now separated into different layers.
To group the layers again, you can simply select (highlight) all the layers, either on the canvas or in the toolbar, and hit Group . Doing this is smart if you want to make changes that needs be done on all layers.
Tip : If you want to hide a layer, you can click on the eye icon located next to the different layers.
Edit the colors of the SVG
Changing the colors of the different layers of an SVG can change the look of the design a lot. There are two options to change the color of the layers:
- Change the colors of the different layers individually
- Color sync multiple layers
Changing the colors of the different layers individually can easily be done with the toolbar to the right. Simply select the layer you'd like to edit, and change the color in Material Colors (located in the top toolbar).
The second option is to color sync the layers. Using this feature will save you time and wasted materials, since you are guaranteed that the layer will be printed in the same color.
In order to color sync you first need to add all the colors you want to work with. In this example we will use pink, yellow and black.
Open Color Sync in the toolbar to the right, and drag and drop each shape into the color that you want to layer to sync to.
Removing a layer
There are two easy ways to delete a layer from your project. You can either select the layer and click the red X in the corner of the highlighted square.
Or you can highlight it and easily remove it with the Delete feature (the trash bin) in the toolbar to the right.
Arranging and aligning layers
You might come across SVG files that aren't arranged in a way of your liking. In Cricut Design Space you can easily arrange and align the layers with the features available in the toolbar.
Aligning layers : Mark the two layer that you want to align. Click Align in the toolbar on the top.
A drop down menu will appear with different options on how to align the object.
In the image below we chose Aligned Bottom . As you can see the two stars are now allowed with the bottom.
Arrange layers
You can easily rearrange the layers of the SVG with the toolbar on the top. In the image below we have moved the stars behind the unicorn. Now, we want to move them to be placed in front of the unicorn. The first step is to mark all the layers we'd like to rearrange (starting with the stars).
Click Arrange in the toolbar on the top. These are the options that you can choose from in the drop down menu:
- Sent To Back : Send the selected object to the back of stacking order. This will make the object appear at the bottom of the Layers Panel.
- Move Backward: Move the selected object one layer backwards in stacking order. This will make the object appear one layer lower on the Layers Panel.
- Send To Front : Bring the selected object to the front of stacking order. This will make the object appear at the top of the Layers Panel.
- Move Forward: Move the selected object one layer forward in stacking order. This will make the object appear one layer higher in the Layers Panel.
In this case, we can choose the option Send to Front .
The marked layers, the stars, are now placed in front of the unicorn.
Weld layers
Welding layers are great for cutting to make sure two layers will be cut together as one object. Simply mark the layers that you'd like to weld together.
Click Weld in the toolbar to the right. The layers will now be welded together as one layer.
Flattened layers
If you are ready to print your design you can merge all selected layers into one single layer with the Flattened feature in the toolbar to the right. Mark all the layers of the design, and click Flattened .
The layers will now be flattened into one single layer and your design is ready to be printed.
